About HorsePlay Racing Stable

Buying and training yearling Standardbreds and racehorses is exciting and scary all at the same time. At HorsePlay Racing Stable, we encourage anyone interested in the harness racing business to ask questions, come to the barn, meet the horses and come to the track during the races to learn learn about the costs (and rewards!) of owning, training and racing Standardbreds.

Training Fees

Billing varies by trainer and location. HorsePlay tries to keep it simple with flat rate billing for their partners, which includes training, feed, hay, bedding, farrier, stall rent, vaccinations, wormers, equipment and health care supplies, such as linaments, supplements, etc. Once a horse starts racing, there are additional costs, but hopefully they will be earning purse money to help offset those additional costs!

Yearlings

Purchasing a yearling requires patience and understanding that they might not make it to the races as a 2-year-old. You will buy a horse at a yearling sale in the fall, with the hopes of getting to the races the next summer. There are monthly training and veterinary bills, as well as stake payments due months before they ever make it to the races.

Claimers

For the claimers in the barn, there is a one-time buy-in, and you can expect to race the next week. The cost to buy the horse varies on the type of horse you plan on racing ($10,000 claimer vs $15,000 claimer).
